Stress is your response to demands or threats, whether it’s small or big. The higher your stress level, the more your nervous system responds by producing more adrenaline and cortisol, hormones caused by stressed. This is the term adrenaline rush comes from. It makes your heart beat faster, your blood pressure goes high and your senses become sharper. This is also called the flight or fight response, a way how your body protects you from harm.


Stress can be beneficial for you as long as it’s contained in your comfort level. It can help you meet expectations and help you perform and motivate you more in the workplace or at home. But too much stress can become harmful to your health. Below are seven signs and symptoms to look out for in emotional distress.


In all health news articles, a change in your sleeping pattern is the most common sign of emotional stress. You find yourself thinking all the time and cannot stay asleep once you do. Lack of sleep can affect your overall health. Aside from having lack of sleep, this will cause you other symptoms like exhaustion, inability to concentrate and physical problems such as headaches and backaches. Try to relax and make a list of your problems to lessen your worries. Create an action plan and try to look ahead for your future.


The next big sign to look out for in emotional distress is drastic changes to your weight and eating patterns. When you’re stressed, a lot of people can either eat a lot that they gain a lot of weight (also called stress eaters) or don’t eat at all that they lose a lot of weight. Either way, both are not healthy. Make sure to eat regular meals and have a well-balanced diet to combat distress.


Chronic physical symptoms also show up when you’re distressed. As mentioned earlier, headaches are very common and you could be experiencing them chronically. Back pain, shoulder pain and other body pain may be present in stress. Aside from that, you can also experience stomach problems such as constipation or diarrhea. It can cause you to feel uncomfortable and unhappy. Do your exercise regularly to help prevent these physical pains and consult a doctor if you need medication.


When you’re stressed, your blood pressure rises up. It can cause you to have mood swings and have a very bad temper. Some become very emotional and become suicidal. They can be violent to oneself or to others. Try to control your anger by doing breathing and coping techniques. Keep calm to control your emotions. If it’s uncontrollable, you might need anger management. Other times, it’s the opposite. They don’t care about their appearance or their hygiene anymore. If this is the case, watch out. Have a family member or friend look out for you when even just the thought of it happens.


Obsessive or compulsive behaviors can also spring up when distressed. Being obsessed with something means that you worry too much. You’re overpowered by your anxiety and would be counterproductive. Compulsions are how you act without you knowing it. It covers up your obsessions. You’ll be paranoid and do things for no apparent reason. Lack of energy or the feeling of tiredness would be a symptom. Your body is unable to handle your emotions and it is manifested by fatigue. If not treated, you’ll have a hard time remembering the things you’ve done. You’ll also have a higher chance of procrastination and avoiding tasks.


You’ll experience the feeling of social withdrawal, so socialize. Try to talk to your family or friends. Attend a stress management workshop or participate in a stress management group. Check on health sites to find one in your area. You’ll be able to make new friends and learn techniques to help you deal with stress.


To cope with emotional distress, you need to get moving. Keep yourself busy with activities. Be calm and relaxed and try to think of good thoughts. Talking to other people, especially with people who have experienced what you’ve gone through would pacify your nerves. Do time management techniques. Eating a healthy diet and get plenty of sleep would also help you reduce emotional distress. Don’t drink or smoke as a coping mechanism for stress.


Stress can become a cause of a serious illness if it is not diagnosed correctly. It is not possible to prevent stress, but you can manage stress effectively. Recognize what makes you more stressed and if you can, try to avoid them.
